The Balance Center at the Midwest Ear Institute, the first of its kind in Indiana, is a medical facility for the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals with dizziness and balance disorders, combining a multidisciplinary team approach with the latest in technology. Patients with vertigo and imbalance can be diagnosed and treated effectively at one location in the most cost-efficient manner possible.
We realize that dizziness problems often have multiple, inter-related causes that involve more than one body system. Our team, headed by Midwest Ear Institute's otologists, Dr. George W. Hicks and Dr. Vincent B. Ostrowski, work closely to eliminate the long, expensive, and frustrating course of care experienced by many patients with balance disorders. We also consult with neurologists, pharmacists, orthopedic doctors, physical therapists, physiatrists, cardiologists, geriatricians, and social workers.
In addition to specialized skills, the team has access to advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment, including audiometry, videonystagmography, electrocochleography, auditory brainstem evoked response, rotational chair testing and vestibular evoked myogenic potential.
Patients who may benefit from referral to the Balance Center include individuals with dizziness and balance problems and vertigo due to an inner ear problem or other neurologic problems; those with either acute or chronic dizziness without obvious explanation; and the elderly with a history of instability.
Some of the specific dizziness disorders we diagnose and treat include: Meniere's Disease, Benign Positional Vertigo, Labyrinthitis, Migraine Associated Disequilibrium, and Mal de Debarquement.
After a diagnosis is made, patients can be managed with a wide variety of medical, surgical, and/or rehabilitative treatments.
The goal of the Balance Center is to work together with the patient, family, primary care clinician and other health professionals in order to return the patient to a maximum level of activity. Please click on any of the links to the left for more information.
